History

Hale Barnard Services for Older People is a private, nonprofit charity that owns and operates Hale House. All of its resources go to serving its residents and program participants.

Our historic Victorian brownstone, restored through a major capital campaign, was once the home of Henry Adams, the historian and writer, and the grandson of John Quincy Adams.

In 1876, the Massachusetts Audubon Society was founded in the parlor of then-owner Harriet Hemenway.

Hale House was named in honor of Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909), a notable Bostonian, spiritual leader and prolific author. Everyone at Hale House is proud to be a part of its important history.
