Hale Barnard Services for Older People is a private non-profit charity that owns and operates Hale House, a historic Victorian brownstone, restored through a major capital campaign. All of its resources go to serving its residents and program participants.

Hale House was named in honor of Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909), a notable Bostonian, spiritual leader and prolific author.

Hale House was once the home of the historian and writer Henry Adams, grandson of President John Quincy Adams.

In 1876, the first Audubon Society was founded by Bostonians Harriet Lawrence Hemenway and her cousin Minna B. Hall, in the parlor of the house.
